Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is throwing players under a lot of pressure, but an optional dungeon called Fog Rift Catacombs is a particular kind of despair. After spending some time trapped in this place, I can see why—this dungeon is simultaneously the best, the worst, and the most fun thing FromSoftware has ever done.
Of course, this article contains spoiler for this one dungeon. Once you cross the large bridge leading away from the DLC’s starting area, the map might direct your gaze northward to a path that appears to lead to a new Shadow of the Erdtree map fragment you can collect. That’s FromSoft’s first trick. After making it past a fortress where you’re literally under fire from piles of enemies, and surviving a misty valley full of stealthy little gremlins trying to stab you in the back, you’ll see messages from other players that read something like this: “No map ahead, all the more tears.”
Then the valley path takes you into the Fog Rift Catacombs. At first glance, it looks like any other crypt-style dungeon in Elden Ring, with a series of stone paths and a few enemies hidden in hard-to-see places to scare you. Then come the giant spike traps from the ceiling. Then come the weird guys with foghorn mouths that spit fireballs at you like Birdo shoots eggs in Mario 2. Then You realize that you not only have to avoid these spike traps, but that you have to ride them up to find hidden paths.
In the Misty Gap Catacombs and, honestly: what the hell21 June 2024
If you play online, you will continue to see messages from other players suffering from increasing despair. There is a room with several soldiers that you can pull back fairly easily to fight one on one. The last enemy in this room is a knight who has his back to you – and I would have I knew it was a trap, but the secret guy just around the corner from that knight killed me anyway. When I entered that room, I was completely distraught with all the messages I had found.
Perhaps the ultimate middle finger that the Fog Rift Catacombs show you is a huge, long hall with another ceiling spike trap that covers the entire route. At the far end is a wizard who will shoot you with machine gun-style magical bolts. You must sprint across the room between each spike trap fall, dodging into side alcoves to avoid damage. The catch? The second alcove you dive into is actually just a hole that you fall through into a sewer area where you must fight what I can only describe as sentient piles of poop.
“I want to challenge whoever made the Fog Rift Catacombs to a cage fight,” one Reddit thread reads, and I understand where that sentiment comes from. I also understand why so many people are calling it “so fun,” a “10/10 catacomb,” and “my favorite Elden Ring dungeon.” You can just feel the level designers laughing at you, so much so that it’s honestly kind of endearing.
This post from Reddit user Magistraten sums it up for me: “This is honestly the funniest place in From Software history. Basically just a series of patented pranks from FromSoft where you, the player, are the punchline. It’s not particularly difficult, especially compared to the rest of the DLC, but damn is it good. Oh, you survived multiple bomb sneezes, various death traps, and a few messages that said ‘first the message, then try an explosion’? Dodge those magic missiles and then have a little goblin. Still alive? Make a hole with a sewer, fight literally some shit, then try again.”
Then there is the boss of the entire dungeon, which is literally called the Death Knight. Like many bosses in Shadow of the Earthtree, the Death Knight has a lot of quick attacks that hit hard and extremely limited windows of time in which you can deal damage. The kicker is a quick grab where the boss grabs you and drains your life to restore his own health bar. Although I eventually defeated Death Knight, I still don’t know if it’s even possible to dodge this attack.

And while I was looking for comments on the Fog Rift Catacombs to flesh out this story and justify my own complicated feelings about the DLC, I just discovered the tweet above and learned that I still have more to find in this dungeon. Damn, I don’t think I’m done yet.
