A Surrey pub is battling it out against rivals from Kent, London and North Yorkshire for the title of Best City Pub in the country. With delicious food, award-winning drinks and unusual events, The Castle in Farnham is the only local pub on the list.
The Castle describes itself as a ‘no-fuss gastro pub’ serving freshly prepared food. This cosy hideaway in the heart of Farnham is perfect for all occasions, from cocktail evenings to tea parties and pub work afternoons.
Inside, a central skylight and large windows create a light and airy feel in the dining room. There is also outdoor seating in a covered courtyard garden, as well as more private spaces called ‘The Library’ and ‘Market View’. Perfect for hosting dinner parties and business meetings, a team is on hand to ensure the event goes to plan.
The pub said: “Our dining room has a light and airy atmosphere, with a stunning skylight in the centre and large windows throughout. Venture out into our peaceful covered courtyard garden; a tranquil oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of city life.”

One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: “I rented one of the castle’s private rooms for my 30th birthday. I was so impressed from start to finish! From the upfront communication regarding pre-orders and payment to the day when the room was set up absolutely flawlessly, I didn’t have to lift a finger. The staff were attentive and professional. Highly recommended.”
No matter which part of the pub you sit in, there’s plenty to choose from. The a la carte menu offers a range of seasonal options as well as pub classics, while the weekday sandwich menu is kept simple with five different lunch options with chips or salad on the side.

You might want to look out for the midweek menu, where two courses are available for £16.95 and three courses for £20.95. Choices include beef ragu ravioli and Cumberland pork sausages, as well as the sweeter crumble tart of the day or amaretti affogato.
Like a classic pub, they serve roasts on Sundays, all with Yorkshire pudding, herbed potatoes, a selection of seasonal vegetables, a rich red wine sauce and all the traditional accompaniments. Currently on offer are beef sirloin, pork loin and beetroot Wellington.
This was praised by one reviewer last year who said: “A great Sunday roast with my family, including a nine-year-old. The food was superb, with excellent quality roast beef and roast pork. This was accompanied by a very good selection of vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. The meat was exceptionally tender and the food was hot, which is great considering it was a very busy service. The portions were good and the food was very good value for money.”
The pub also hosts events such as Euro watch parties and the rather unusual Brush Party. An evening to show off your creative flair. What you paint changes each time and a helpful artist will guide you through each step to create a masterpiece. Everything is catered for and you have the option to grab a drink from the bar while you paint.
