Rumors of a Resident Evil 1 remake in 2026 have been debunked as insiders disagree

Will there be a new remake or not? (Capcom)

The rumors about a new remake of the first Resident Evil are not as clear as they seemed, although the 30th anniversary will be celebrated in 2026.

There have been rumors about a new Resident Evil 1 remake for a while now and with the entire franchise’s 30th anniversary coming in 2026, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Capcom was planning a second remake of the classic PlayStation 1 game at this point.

This also means that it is very easy to make something up and pass it off as a rumor. And so it seems that various sources are divided on whether or not a new Resident Evil 1 remake is on the way.

However, if this is the case, the latest rumor is that the new remake will not feature pre-rendered backgrounds, but will feature the crimson head zombies from the original 2002 remake on the GameCube.

According to Biohazard Declassified, the new version of the original survival horror will be slower than the Resident Evil 2 remake, with zombies taking more damage and each of them having their own unique design.

The remake will still have a third-person perspective, but is described as “different” and slower than the more action-oriented games.

There will also be an expansion of the Resident Evil 1 story, although it’s not clear what that might mean – perhaps some new details to tie it into the later games or to accommodate the fact that there probably won’t be a Resident Evil will be zero remake.

Previously, film rumormaker DanielRPK had also suggested that the remake would be released in 2026, and initially it seemed as if AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem also agreed.

Dusk Golem is the most reputable Resident Evil leaker, but it appears that a screenshot that made the rounds on Sunday that appeared to show him confirming the rumors was a fake.

The tweet above seems to make it clear that he doesn’t think there’s a new remake, although there’s always the possibility that he just doesn’t know about it yet.

It always seemed inevitable that Capcom would move on to a new remake of the original Resident Evil, as the first one, while highly regarded, is now very old and uses static, pre-rendered backgrounds, like the PS1 game.

That said, there are many reasons for a new remake, the only question is when to do it. Some had theorized that Capcom was waiting to finish all the remakes, and we may actually have reached that point, as it’s not clear what else would be done after that.

The 30th anniversary is of course also a good excuse, but others had thought that they would wait for the next generation or try to make the new remake in first person to differentiate it further.

Capcom will be at Summer Game Fest, but if the remake doesn’t arrive until 2026, it’s more likely we’ll hear about Resident Evil 9 first, regardless of whether these latest rumors are true or not.
